Information

Italian sparkling wine production is set to reach a staggering one billion bottles in the next three years, far outstripping that of France, according to data released by Corriere Vinicolo at the Verona Sparkling Wine Festival. Data from the Observatory Center of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture show that the value of sparkling wine production in 2020 will account for almost a quarter of the value of Made in Italy exports, about 1.5 billion euros, of which 69% will come from Prosecco sparkling wines, with the rest being Moscato, Asti, rosé sparkling wines, as well as a number of sparkling wines made by the traditional method.

Prosecco Sparkling Wine

Prosecco, produced in northeastern Italy, is one of the world's top three sparkling wines, along with Spain's Cava and France's Champagne.

The history of Prosecco can be traced back to 2000 years ago, when the wise Romans used the locally grown Glera white grapes in the village of Prosecco to make a wine called “Puccino”, which was the predecessor of Prosecco.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the cultivation of Guerrera gradually expanded, from its origin in the village of Purosecco throughout the Veneto region and into the neighboring Friuli region.

In the 20th century, a new method of vinification emerged. The local winemakers put the base wine into large, elegant vats for a second fermentation, during which the sugar in the grapes is transformed into fine bubbles. This method of fermentation was modified to create the “Charmat Method”, also known as “fermentation in tanks”, for the production of Prosecco sparkling wines, as it is known today.

Prosecco benefited from the advent of the “Chama method”, which, compared to the “traditional method” of making Champagne, significantly reduced the time and cost of production, but still produced sparkling wines of high quality. This inexpensive sparkling wine soon became very popular.

Glera is the grape variety used to make Prosecco sparkling wine, which was originally named “Prosecco”, but in 2009, when the Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene appellation was promoted to DOCG status, the word “Prosecco” was legally required to be used only as a geographical indication, so the grape was renamed Glera. However, in 2009, when the Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene appellation was promoted to DOCG status, the word “Prosecco” was legally required to be used only as a geographical indication, so the grape was renamed Glera.

Glera grapes ripen late and have high acidity, producing sparkling wines that are fresh and refreshing, with strong floral and fruity aromas, mostly of green apple and pear, and light and vibrant wines that are loved by consumers everywhere.

Moscato, another aromatic Muscat grape, is also fermented in tanks to produce the popular sweet Moscato sparkling wines. The famous regions are Piedmont and the northern part of Veneto. Moscato sparkling wines are characterized by full, dense bubbles and attractive fruity and floral aromas, which make even a non-drinker feel the pure joy of drinking Moscato sparkling wines.
